The Epic NEXT company - High School students from across New York City training with Epic's ensemble artists as mentors to become the arts leaders of tomorrow - spent four weeks exploring a new set of questions about race in their America.
They’ve bent the old framework into a deeper personal exploration of what it means to be a young person of color today. What is "normal" - who defines that standard and why do we choose to live by it? What do we mean when we accuse someone of "acting white?" And why are the representations of whiteness in our lives so consistently considered "better?"
Integrating narrative, poetry, and collaboratively composed song with re-creations of interviews they conducted with community members diverse in age, race, and gender, the Epic NEXT ensemble has created a powerful documentary theatre piece- Beyond Color.
