Playwriting

NEWSPAPER THEATRE PROJECT In government and economics classes, students read newspaper articles that explore major contemporary issues.  In some projects students write and perform a monologue portraying a particular character in that article.  The series of monologues are performed in class for an audience of peers and faculty members.   In other projects small groups create short plays inspired by the article. All projects utilize research and fact checking and develop student awareness of multiple perspectives.

WRITING HISTORY PROJECT In history classrooms, students write short plays that examine critical historical questions.

COURAGE IN THE FACE OF EVIL In the global history classes, students research the genocides of Rwanda, Darfur, Cambodia & Iraq.  After exploring the question “What are the origins of genocide?” and conducting research on their topic, students write a collection of short plays, performed as staged readings for their peers.CITIZEN ARTIST FESTIVAL In Government or Economics classrooms students use a combination of research and creative imaginings to collectively write a play inspired by a particular current socio-economic issue.   These plays are performed in a variety of community and school venues as part of a festival that culminates the Citizen Artist sequence.
